Italy Police Shut Gates To This 'Sieged' Popular Tourist Destination In Verona
Normally the attraction is closed on Monday, but lack of supervision led to chaos
Italy police had to respond to the courtyard where Juliet’s balcony is in Verona due to a surge of people seeking to see the tourist attraction despite the fact it is closed on Mondays.
The police responded to what is being referred to as a “siege” by shutting the gates to close off the courtyard to tourists. Tourism officials were not present at the location to control the crowds because of the Monday closure of the attraction.
According to the Italian News Agency ANSA, “tourists since early morning crowded the narrow space where the bronze statue of Juliet is located, even narrower due to a construction site but still accessible for the commercial activities that overlook it.”
“In a short time the situation became chaotic, due to the lack of quotas for visitors, and the local police were forced to close the space for security reasons,” the news article commented.
However, a secret way to access the tourist destination has surfaced and many travelers were trying that solution to get around the long lines due to the construction issue.
